See below, this is what i mean about zero tolerance sports betting. Im just going to carry on like this for a year, virtually nullifying the risk to the absolute minimum and making gradual small profits subsequently...im already up 75 quid!!

£100,000 in the zero tolerance pot (only a zero tolerance approach to sports betting allowed to take money out of this pot)

    1. 07/10/08, £1,500 single with www.bluesq.com
-Cambridge United to win or draw versus Lewes (Soccer, 07/10/08) at price of 1/20

Won. Result: Cambridge United 1 Lewes 0. £100,075 in the Z.T pot!

Oh, by the way, just thought I'd add, that last imaginary bet i placed last night, the 34,000 on Minnesota, S.Warinka, Cambridge, Burton and draw and J.Barry to win the darts.....well yet again they all won apart from the most obvious.

S.Wawrinka was arguably the easiest selection and at odds of 1/6, he should have pissed it. He was top seed to win it outright and was defending the title he won last year. But he lost to a massive underdog, a German ranked 125th in the world! Bloody Germans!

Had Wawrinka won, which surely 90 times out of 100 he would (just like Arsenal against Hull), i would have won an imaginary amount of £393,000 which would have been an overall profit of £193,000. Had Arsenal also won, id be £293,000 in profit! The line between success and failure is so fine, but if i do the zero tolerance approach surely the line wont be so fine and i will succeed.

    Results of that bet: Minnesota 30 New Orleans Saints 27, S.Wawrinka lost to P.Petzschner 7-6 2-6 6-7, J.Barry 2 B.Dolan 1, Cambridge United 1 Lewes 0, Barrow 0 Burton 0.

    Good luck with this punter.

I have just read your conclusions regarding the 100K experiment (phew!!) and whilst I think you are mainly correct I just cannot go along with your "zero tolerance" approach. I think you really do need to play some poker and consider the idea of the value bet.

To take football as an example I would never consider placing any bet at odds below 5/13 (or 1.39). Why? Quite simply the risk does not justify the return. Take your last bet. I know nothing about the teams but in taking a 1/20 price you are in effect saying that for every 21 times the match is played Cambridge would have to avoid defeat 20 times just for you to break even. Possible, but unlikely given that there are so many variables imo. Let's say you make the bet 50 times and lose only once:

    You win: (49 x £75) - £1500 = £2175

    But you have invested (bet) 50 x £1500 = £75000

Giving you a return on your investment (ROI) of 2.9%.

You can get much better rates than this at high street banks!

By all means go for the safer bets, and certainly stick to singles, but please forget these very short odds "sure things".
