Hi all,

Ste has allowed me the honour, or the burden, of scoring the winter league.

Currently it is Kapsawak 100, everyone else 0, but don’t worry there is plenty of time for you to all catch up.

In an attempt to keep the league alive and exciting until the end, we are going to alter the league points system to better reflect how tournament poker actually pays out.

- The points system will be that only top half of the field get points (rounded up), so if 8 entrants top 4 get points, if 9 players top 5.

- Up until the top 3 it will be flat scoring 1, 2, 3.. ..

- But 3rd gets points times 1.5

- 2nd is points * 2

- 1st is points * 2.5

E.g. there are 16 entrants:

Top 8 get paid and the scoring is as follows

8th – 1
7th – 2
6th – 3
5th – 4
4th – 5
3rd – 9
2nd – 14
1st –20

If anyone has suggestions or objections I am open to hear them. The first league game is at 20 : 00 GMT this evening and the scoring will be finalised by 19 : 00.

That does seem a lot of pts for 1st place.
I'm happy to change it up early if you think it's too weighted towards top spot in a 10 week league.

Wondering if half way through some of us may have no chance of catching up, will drop out and we lose numbers.

In some past leagues, someone came up with a formula.
Still get a nice score for top spot but other entrants can keep in contention(get at least 10-pts for turning up and playing)
It isn't perfect either but not bad.

The formula used was:

Points = 10 * [sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)]
Where:
n is the number of entrants
k is the place of finish (k=1 for the first-place finisher, and so on)

For a 20 player league you got scores like this for week 1:

I can still change it if people want, but my initial thoughts are the scoring is set now, so need an overwhelming backlash to alter the system. If I was to redo it I would maybe make first place just * 2.5 points.

There are several reasons why I felt that a flat 1,2,3,4,5 point stucture is not the way to go; your point above being one of them - it is impossible to win if the leader reaches a stage where they could just sitout and coast into enough points. Whilst it may now appear that pmp has an unassailable lead, bear in mind that a top heavy points system also enables anyone to gain ground if they string together a decent run of results. The tournament payout structure at SL is top-heavy, so whilst I believe that a league should reward consistency, the points system should encourage winning play and in some way reflect the cash prizes.

The formula you have outlined maybe the way to go, but I also feel there is a benefit in keeping the scoring relatively simple, in order to enable players to know where they stand and what they need to achieve in order to get into the paying places.

It is up to you 7letters, do you want 1st * 3 for 27 points, or 1st * 2.5 for 22.5? Not meant to be a sarky, or funny question, am rather playing this by ear and appreciate your feedback.

I'm reluctant to make huge changes to the scoring now that a game has been played, but lucky for me one of the admins won that game, so if you want the reward for first place toned down abit I could do that.

I have altered the scoring to be 1st = points * 2.5.

You have the right of appeal, and if you take that right your appeal will be granted.
